Outreach Activities for Diabetic Retinopathy
Recognizing the rising burden of diabetes and its impact on vision, Nava Dristi Eye Hospital operates an active Outreach Unit for Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) Screening. The program focuses on early detection and timely management of DR to prevent irreversible vision loss among diabetic patients in rural and semi-urban communities.
Current Coverage: 9 Public Health Centers / Health Posts
The outreach team is conducting regular DR screening camps in collaboration with 9 public health centers and health posts across Morang, Sunsari and adjoining districts. Activities include:
- Community Awareness – Health education sessions on diabetes and eye health for patients and health workers at each health post.
- Screening Services – Direct Ophthalmoscope and basic vision testing using portable equipment. If needed blood sugar and blood pressure are checked on-site.
- Referral – Patients with sight-threatening DR are referred to Nava Dristi Eye Hospital for laser, injections, or surgery.
- Capacity Building – Training of local health workers to identify high-risk diabetic patients and ensure regular follow-up.
- Data & Follow-up – Maintaining patient records and coordinating with health posts for treatment compliance and repeat screening.
Impact Goal
Through this outreach network, Nava Dristi Eye Hospital aims to screen over 2,000 diabetic patients annually and reduce DR-related blindness by ensuring early diagnosis and accessible treatment at the community level.
